Anantnag bypolls: EC to take Phone after Having report ministry

A study on the ground position in the country is going to be filed to the poll panel on Friday evening, Jammu and Kashmir CEO states.

    The poll panel is going to take a telephone on holding Anantnag Lok Sabha bypolls after obtaining a report on Friday in the ground position in the militancy-ridden state from the Jammu and Kashmir authorities and the home ministry.

    After polling day violence in Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency left eight people dead and scores injured on April 9 by-elections to the parliamentary constituency have been postponed out of April 12 to May 25.

    “The Election Commission of India (ECI) is yet to have a last call on the Anantnag bypoll. A ground study on the situation in Kashmir is anticipated this (Friday) evening in the home ministry and the state authorities,” state’s chief juvenile officer Shantmanu told the HT.

    He said after obtaining the report the poll panel might have a decision.

    He informed that while the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) had advocated the ECI to postpone the bypolls indefinitely, even the Congress and the National Conference (NC) had kept their stance “impartial”

    The CEO further quoted the 2 parties as stating that there is a calm atmosphere obligatory for conducting the polls and that maintaining law and order is the responsibility of the state authorities.

    On Panchayat polls, he explained election authorities are prepared with revised electoral rolls. But he does not subscribe to this idea of holding the Soviet elections at this juncture due to the scenario in Kashmir valley.
